Orangetown’s tax mess

January
7

During his State of the Town speech tonight, Supervisor Thom Kleiner will talk about affordable housing for seniors, about the environment, and about economic development, among other topics.

But here’s one topic that he won’t touch: the town’s botched handling of a $4 million payment stemming from a tax settlement with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

The town didn’t budget for the tax payment and scrambled to cover the cost at the very last minute. Kleiner said the court’s decision on the tax case was handed down late in the year.

Kleiner added the tax payment to the agenda of a special meeting, and no one — not even board members — knew about the oversight until just before the start of the meeting.

The board ended up approving a measure to bond up to $2 million to cover half the cost. The rest will be covered by a tax increase in 2008.
