A Haverstraw Republican says the supervisor ignored his interest in Ramundo's seat

In my recent story on Papo Cancel’s quick comeback to the Haverstraw Town Board, Supervisor Howard Phillips was quoted, saying that two people — Cancel and Salvatore Greco of West Haverstraw — notified the Democratic Committee of their interest in the Town Board seat vacated by John Ramundo. He also said because Greco later withdrew his application, Cancel was the only one left.
After the story was published, John Lawrence, a Republican who unsuccessfully ran for the Town Board in November, sent me e-mail to point out the fact that in the week before Thanksgiving, he met Phillips at Mt Ivy Diner and told him that he wanted that seat.
Then I asked Phillips why he omitted the fact that Lawrence expressed his interest.
“He met with me, but he never applied,� Phillips said. “He told me he was interested, but he never wrote to the Town Board or anything like that.�
So I asked Phillips if he advised Lawrence to write letters to the Town Board to tell the board members that he wanted to be appointed. Phillips said he did.
And Phillips continued: “I like John, he’s a nice person. … Anybody can apply to the Democratic Committee, but if you’re a Republican, I think it would be hard pressed for the Democratic Committee to back.�
Phillips was basically saying that he didn’t include Lawrence in the pool of applicants because he didn’t write letters to the Town Board, but even if he had done so, he wouldn’t have been appointed because he’s a Republican.

I love how you speak the truth Aiko. I am a democrat and I like John Lawrence and think he could have done a good job as Town Councilman. I look forward to supporting him when he runs against Cancel. Phillips did not give him a fair chance because he had his mind set on one person and one person only CANCEL. When Cancel was running in this past election he was told if he lost he would still be given Ramundo seat no matter what. That is why he threw all his support to Gould and Soto, because he knew he was going to lose but no matter what he was still going to be a councilman. Politics SUCKS AND IS DIRTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy Howard, what a rotten thing to do to someone you like and in your words is a "nice person"... Just another link in that chain you'll have to carry through eternity… Howard, you deserve everything you get.

Howie makes his own truth, whatever he feels is true is true…The people of Haverstraw need to wake up…THey must realize that they can vote for a Republican. So this Novemeber lets send Paop Home Packing….I would love to see it happen…It is up to you the people of Haverstraw to make it happen…Vote for John Lawrence
Howard NEVER told John to write a letter, he told him there were people in the organization that were ahead of him…and that it would not sit well with the others. I know John Lawrence and I would support him if he runs against Papo…He will really shake things up and show Howie how to save money, and bring in more revenue without rasining taxes…wait till next tax year town taxes are going to soar…because Howie put all our eggs in one basket…as he always does

Its absolutley amazing the double standard the is applied to Democrats and Republicans. Howie, have youever looked at the Scott Vandehoef lineup when it comes to jobs in Rockland County. Comm of personell, Patsy Prendergast, HAV – Comm of Planning and Comm or Transportation, Sal Corrallo HAV- County Attorney Patricia Zugibe HAV – Comm of Finance Chris Kopf HAV... If Scott Vanderhoef was to say "I cant hire these people, they are Democrats" there would be people in the streets with torches and pitchforks screaming to rid us of the Frankenstein monster that would put politics before the qualifications of the person… In Howies own words "where is the outcry???"
I would love to see Howie answer some of these blogs….Come on Howie…Maybe Papo can help you…I think you will pay for this decision…

I don't think Papo is the problem, It's Howie. We need someone to come out on the DEM ticket against him. One Howie is out then you will see what these counselmen are all about. They just need to stop hiding behind HOWARD and tell he enough is enough. They need to take control.
Howie is the problem, but if we let Paop stay we let Howie win, we need to find someone to run against Papo and take him out…Divivde and conquer, that is the only way to rid Howie from Haverstraw…..Start with Papo…..He is a puppet anyway….they all are with the exception of Soto…howie pulls the string and their heads bob….VOTE anyone but Papo…tell all your friends

A vote for Papo is not a vote for Howie. We need to get Howie out. He is the problem. ANYBODY WANT TO RUN AGAINST HOWIE IN A PRIMARY FOR SUPERVISOR ON THE DEM TICKET?
Hey if ALLIANCE ENERGY GROUP is willing to pay $10M for the Lovett Plant, Do you think they would pay $26.9 for Howie. He could be the guard dog. All they have to do is throw him a bone.. And then maybe HAVERSTRAW can get a real SUPERVISOR to run this town. HEY COUNSELMAN CAN YOU CALL AND MAKE THE DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
