Legislator Jay Hood Jr., D-Haverstraw, has announced that he chose newly-elected Legislator Jacques Michel, D-Spring Valley, as the vice chair of the Public Safety Committee.

Hood is new to the Legislature himself, having been appointed in July and elected in November. Hood is a lawyer and doesn’t have a law enforcement background, but Michel does and he was a logical choice for the vice chair spot this year.

Michel is a sheriff’s deputy and is the founder and executive director of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department Crime Awareness Program and its Youth Corps Program.

  1. Good Grief

....Michel also has experience with law enforcement dating back many years; when he found himself in trouble with the Feds for having forged immigration papers in exchange for money. A nice side business for himself. But, that matter didn't stop him from being appointed as a deputy by Sheriff Kralik (needed that voting communities support), why should it interfere with this appointment to this important post either….....ahhh….politics.

  2. FYI

Michel doesn't run away from his conviction. It happened in 1978 and he was working for an anti-poverty agency.

He helped Haitian immigrants file false documents to obtain resident alien status.
He says the Government prosecuted him after he refused to turn over a list of people he had helped. ''In the 70's, the Government was like a bounty hunter,'' he said, Port-au-Prince still in his voice after 34 years in this country. ''I could not reveal the names to Immigration so they could go after these people. I would never give up my people.''

  3. Skeptcal

Something rubs me the wrong way about Mr. Michel. Something in his speech I saw from the first meeting in January of this year just made me nervous.

Reminds me of Mr. Delhomme. That's not a good thing.

  4. Skeptcal

Which, being from Haverstraw, and Legislator Hood being my Legislator, please don't align yourself with Michel….PLEASE… I don't trust this guy
