Day's speech had a lot of specifics, not the usual hosannas and platitudes typically heard. He talked about saving us money, forcing the MTA to put more into Rockland, energy as Sylus said, and even brought up child protection online and making criminals pay for their time in jail. Hoo-rah. The guy is dead on, and "too much" should relaize that Day rightfully stands above many of this crowd. And Sylus is right about Cornell as she thinks the MTA and its plans are a commitment. Day said he was looking for real money, not promises. Good for him. A guy who does not accept BS. Others can learn from him. And to "too much" ego didnt take Karben down, booze and young boys did. I was really glad to see that atleast somebody is giving more than lip service to the idea of energy consumption in county government. Perhaps this idea will get legs taking a positive stand on energy use and seeking to have the county really start to go green. I mean a lot of talk has been passed off by the regular suspects — yet little if any discernable action. When are we going to hold people accountable in government for the environment? I understand from the public record that Harriet Cornell's comments were critical of his address. In particular I took umbrage with her saying that the county already did an energy audit. My comment is that what did they do — and when did they do it?! On WRCR I heard that several years ago that all the county did was a limited energy audit of three buildings and changed a few light fixtures. Day seemed to be calling for a full NYSERDA energy audit of all county owned buildings. An energy audit that NYSERDA would pay half of would produce comprehensive practical recommendations that could lead to real energy saving measures. This is the starting place to really reduce the carbon footprint of county buildings. This is what should have happened already — for Harriet Cornell to dismiss it and for nobody to follow up is unacceptable. With the advances in energy sciences we can really see positive changes in this area if we just move ahead. Geothermal, photovoltaic capabilities, light and heat sensors are all options that have incentives so it is a win by reducing costs — but more importantly helping the environment. So for Cornell or anyone else to dismiss Day's comments is just frankly giving an established politician (Harriet Cornell) a free pass because "she owns the issue." Well she and the remaining fifteen legislators don't own this issue — because they have done nothing on it. Hopefully Day's energy and suggestion will get the ball rolling in a practical way. I don't know about all of his other proposals — for me he gets my gold star — if he can get the county to really do full audits. And finally shame, shame, shame on Harriet Cornell for criticizing this idea — lets really do something to reduce our carbon footprint in the government buildings that the county operates. Changing a few light bulbs is nothing. Way to go Ed Day on coming up with a real idea to help the environment and save money!
