The Nyack Parking Authority settled a taxpayer lawsuit last week alleging that the agency abused its powers and mispent taxpayer money when it bought $424,900 in parking meters without bidding. The Authority said it settled to avoid a long, expensive legal battle, and not because it did anything wrong.
In the settlement, the Authority agreed to give public notice and hold hearings on matters involving contracts and expenditures and to follow the Public Authorities Law and General Municipal Law when it comes to bidding. Most of the terms were an affirmation of what the agency was supposed to be doing anyway.
Surprisingly, the Village of Nyack was not named in the lawsuit. Nyack bought two of the meters on its own for $23,605 — also without bidding — but the two taxpayers who filed the lawsuit only targeted the Parking Authority and its chairman in the lawsuit.
They say it’s because the Parking Authority has a pattern of ignoring the public and making decisions without input from village residents.
Here is the story about the settlement and here is a story about the lack of bids. Nyackers, what do you think?
