Not everyone appreciates arbor award

Marvin Baum believes congratulations are not in order. Browsing through Orange & Rockland’s press releases, the Valley Cottage resident learned that The National Arbor Day Foundation named the company a “Tree Line USA Utility” in January. The designation recognizes national leadership in caring for trees while meeting service objectives.
In a letter to O&R, Baum — who has been protesting O&R’s tree-removal program — wrote: “This truly would have been funny, had your company not already caused so much suffering and pain to the people of Rockland County with its new ‘scorched earth’ tree-cutting program.”
O&R says it is following a 2005 state mandate requiring them to remove trees that could threaten transmission lines and lead to power outages. O&R said in the release about the arbor award that it makes “a concerted effort to meet Tree Line USA requirements by training its workers in quality tree-care practices and by helping its customers to plant appropriate trees near utility lines. That approach not only helps to provide beautiful trees for the future, but also long-term operational savings for the company.”

I could not agree more. There is absolutely no regard for the greenery and wildlife that inhabits it. A notice was left on our door with respect to cutting down tress that presently pose no danger to the lines. It would take at least 30 years for these trees to present a danger – not to mention that the majority of the trees that O&R’s contractor stated had to be cut are not under the power lines. It is my guess that the contractors hired by O&R are paid per tree cut and have no regard for the wildlife that makes their home in these trees – especially during the winter.
