Preserve Ramapo’s Robert Rhodes and county Legislator Joe Meyers will hold a press conference on the steps of the courthouse at 9 a.m. tomorrow during which they will announce a lawsuit against the town of Ramapo and its board to stop the sale of the former Tilcon quarry located in Suffern.
Members of the village board have been upset that Town Supervisor St. Lawrence and the Town Board decided to sell the quarry in Suffern without consulting the village.
The property is to be sold to a developer proposing at least 440 condominiums. Rhodes, Meyers, and James Hyer, their attorney, will explain the reason for the lawsuit during the conference.
St. Lawrence has said that alleviating floods along the Mahwah River – particularly in the Squire’s Gate neighborhood – was the impetus for the quarry sale.

Suzanne: It is now up to 496 condo units. (and what that will do to traffic, water, sewers)
Bob, Joe, Hyer: Litigating this sadly penalizes the taxpayer more than Town Hall.
Folks: The only folks winning here are the lawyers. Suffern Village Hall can stop the whole thing by not granting the zone change. This was a back room deal that can be rectified out of court by Suffern’s board. As of now, the purchaser is the proud of owner of a big hole in the ground with 40 feet of water in it.
The market appraised value of 62 Acres in Suffern at that site is quite more than what it was sold for. Not to mention it was a gift to the town. More litigation and more media frenzy can’t seem to cajole this Town Hall to a moderate comportment. They are hell-bend on making Ramapo a city.
Solution: Tabla rasa. Suffern reject the proposal. Without the zone change all bets are off.
