Flashing sign advertises police exam

August
29

Driving east on Route 59 toward Nyack, it’s hard to miss – especially at night.  The orangish  flashing sign is recruiting for the next police exam.

Located on the median, the Clarkstown Police Department sign flashes, “Police Exam.  Apply by 9/24/08. Call 638-5200.”

Only if you are driving eastbound, can you read the sign.

The flashing advertisment is part of another countywide effort to attract non-whites to take the civil service exam for the police. The effort has been going on for decades.

Rockland’s 10 police forces – including the Sheriff’s Department – are pooling efforts to encourage minorities – particularly women and people of color – to sign up to take the quadrennial mandatory exam on Nov. 15. Civil Services rules allow police department to choose among the top three scorers on the exam.
For eligibility questions, to download an application or for other information, call 845-638-5200 or visit www.co.rockland.ny.us/Personnel/default.htm and click “civil service exams.”

  1. Police Exam

That is a pretty creative way of doing thing. I know that would definitely grab the attention of many people that would get involved, but really don’t know how.
