Clarkstown Republican leaders will convene tonight while Democrats will meet next week to choose their candidates for town justice to succeed Joel Flick, who died last month.
The Republican Committee is meeting at 7:30 p.m. today in Clarkstown Town Hall. The Democratic Committee has scheduled its nominating convention for 7 p.m. on Sept. 15.
Rockland GOP Chairman Vincent Reda said today that the GOP hopefuls include attorneys Duncan Lee, acting Justice Thomas Mascola, Michelle Tierney, a former Rockland prosecutor, Debbie Kahn, a Brooklyn prosecutor and Paul Chiaramonte, a former New Jersey prosecutor. Mascola lost to Flick several times, including last November, when Lee also ran for the bench.
Reda said former District Attorney Michael Bongiorno was offered the nod, but has chosen to remain with the New York State Attorney General’s Office’s Organized Crime Task Force in White Plains.
Democratic Party Chairman Vincent Monte and other party officials said party members seeking the nomination include Rolf Thorsen, confidential law secretary to Family Court Judge William Warren, defense lawyer Keith Braunfotel, and attorney Keith Cornell.
Political parties can name their candidate by convention after today’s primary and file the certificate of nomination with the Board of Elections by Sept. 16. The Clarkstown Town Board also can appoint someone to serve until Dec. 31.
Flick, 69, a New City resident for 40 years and a lawyer since 1963, served close to 13 years on the bench, winning a term last November. The position pays $85,000 annually.
Flick, who was married with four grown children, worked with high school students interested in the law through the Rockland Bar Association’s annual Mock Trial Competition. He helped create the state’s first domestic violence court in Rockland County.
