Shrinking Suffern’s Urban Renewal Site

September
11

The village is looking at an urban renewal project one-third the size of the original plan to upgrade Orange Avenue near the central business district and boost the trade of downtown merchants.

That’s the meat of a hearing this week by the Planning Board, which heard Deputy Mayor Dagan LaCorte announce the smaller project. He said the change — about 200 fewer condominiums — resulted from his speaking with residents and hearing their concerns.

Some residents at this week’s meeting continued to express worries about traffic and strains on the municipal budget, despite the reduced scale of the project. Some also thought that the downtown could benefit more from a better mix of stores and upgraded facades, while others saw people with money in their pockets living closer to the downtown as an economic boost.

What do you think? Should the village proceed with the smaller renewal plan? Should the village and Chamber of Commerce plot an overhaul of the downtown?

What businesses does Suffern need, and which ones would you support?
