A new supervisor’s car is on its way in Haverstraw

April
11

I recently received an anonymous call, telling me that Haverstraw town Supervisor Howard Phillips bought a new town car for him despite the town’s challenging financial condition.

The town had to raise its tax rate for 2009 by 12 percent to finance its $32.96 million spending plan.

Phillips defended the purchase, saying that the town did not use town taxpayers’ money to buy the new supervisor’s car, which is on its way. He added that his current car was also purchased using a state grant more than seven years ago. He put 80,000 miles on it over the years, he said.

Phillips said that a reliable car would be necessary because his job requires him to visit many places, including Albany.

“Every single day, including Saturdays and Sundays and evenings and mornings, I’m driving out there, checking on things,” Phillips said.

He noted that Haverstraw town’s practice in supervisor’s car is frugal compared to some other towns, although he did not want to specify which towns.

And this is a story how? So what? Big deal. IF it didn’t come from tax payer money, so what?

And, Ms. Matsuda, with the mention of an anonymous call, you make it seem like you were reporting on something important, and turns out, it’s not

It is interesting how we have been taught to believe thatif it is a “Grant” it is not taxpayer money. However, it is. Of course there were no probing questions, like what kind of grant was it? Because Howard is a police commisioner, was it said to be a police vehicle? Seeing as it has Redlights and Sirens. Or was it the new snowplow we were earmarked to get, AND DIDNT because King needed a new coach to cart the kiddies to hockey games all over the north east. Also, was it necessary to get leather seats? and seating for 9 (three rows). Once again only half the story. Full disclosure would be nice. I believe our new president calls it transparency. Maybe that is because you can see right through it if you actually open your eyes… Another round of the kool-aid for all the Haverstraw taxpayers!!!! And make Vicki’s a double…

All Town supervisors are provided vehicles. Legislators get special license plates. The County Executive has a car provided for him by the County, and on and on.

My point is, this isn’t a story worth mentioning on a blog, or anywhere.

Akiko should take a ride to the Town garage and see where a boat is stored that is often towed by the black Tahoe when its used on vacations. Should the IRS do an audit of this person’s taxes. Does he claim the personal use of the vehicle when filing? The plates on it say “FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY” yet he goes shopping and out to dinner in it. That is against the law. The County executive turned in his county car to help save the taxpayers some money. Not in the Kingdom of Haverstraw. Also while you are there check out the golf course attendant’s living quarters. He is paid over $80K gets a rent free trailer, truck, golf cart and now has a hot tub. Very nice to be a friend of Howie isn’t it. Like Nero who fiddled while Rome was burning, Howie is getting rich with salaries and perks on taxpayer’s hard earned dollars. Madoff ain’t got nothing on this crook!

Why does he need such a big 9 passenge SUV leather seats? He could get by on an efficient green hybrid that was much cheaper. We can only conclude the supervisor has champagne taste while the taxpayers only have beer pocketbooks. We see this guy at Shop Rite and Public House weekends. Is he on official town business? What a fraud! We need an investigation. Where is the IRS? Attorney General? FBI?

i dont get it,. the rest of us have to use our own cars. along with getting 200k a year they get a car? how nice. since it belongs to the county, if a haverstraw resident needs a ride will they pull over and give one of the owners a lift?

This is how i see it. if you see a county bought car and you belong to that county, you should be allowed to get a ride.

  9. TAX P

Orangetown police take black cars home with them…Even during off shifts and over weekends when they arent even working! couldnt someone else in the dept use this car ..obviously there is a surpluss of cars if they can sit at homes for days and nights …HOW WASTEFUL of tax dollars! They park them out on street and its like a slap on the face to the tax payers. What games are being played so they can get more cars. Keep them at the police dept and not sitting out on the tax payers street to remind us how you are robbing our tax dollars to staff a low effort low crime area. REALITY needs to hit the orangetown police dept. NO excuses. your jobs are not high stress or high effort…NYC cops make half the salary and are really doing work. We are in a serious economic crisis and there is a serious problem when we are taking advantage of the system. Youre building walls up in this community ..stop it before its too late.
