Nyack free parking

Nyack is now offering free parking on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.
Local merchants Patti Aagaard and Marie Somos, who’ve created several collaborative business projects in Nyack, asked the village board to provide the free parking to help promote “Thursday Night Open Late.”
Merchants hope the initiative, which includes extended store hours and restaurant promotions, will make Nyack a destination on a relatively slow night in the week.
The free parking, which will cost the village about $400 a week in lost revenue, started last week and will continue on a trial basis until Jan. 1, 2010.

Ben:
FYI, the $400 a night estimate is a conservative number—as per Nyack’s Comptroller. This was an estimate that was made earlier this year based on average parking revenue in Feb and March, months which are less trafficked than the summer, fall and holiday shopping seasons.
Also, despite the slow economy, weekly parking revenues have been climbing each week through the Spring and the Summer (as per the Comptroller). If you use the $400 estimate and count each Thursday from July 16 through the end of the year, the Village is forgoing $10,000 in 2009 parking revenue. However, trends indicate that the actual revenue is probably more than that.
FYI!
Thanks for the info, Dave. Tell Doug I say hello! $10,000? Really? John Shields said it was more like $2K-3K.
In order to grow business, Nyack needs to promote itself outside of Nyack. It’s marketing initiatives to date are primarily reaching townspeople. I’ve always believed that Nyack is a destination, the primary attraction in my mind, for anyone, county resident or beyond, interested in going out in Rockland for a decent meal, entertainment and nice shops.
The street parking issue and parking issues in general should be solved by building a lot. How else is there to accommodate vehicles?
