5

Tomorrow night’s Planning Board meeting (8 p.m., Jan. 6) could be of interest to history and film buffs.

One item on the agenda is for a yeshiva with dormitory rooms for students on the former Burgess Meredith estate off Camp Hill Road, just east of the village of Pomona.

The stage and screen actor – one of [...]

History in Montebello

January
5

The village has received $6,500 from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to survey and catalogue properties of interest. It’s expected that the listing could help the village preserve its 18th and 19th century farmsteads that line many of its stone wall-lined roads.

Do you have any suggestions for the village board and [...]

Seven Lakes Drive on snowy days

December
29

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission has reduced its wintertime maintenance of Seven Lakes Drive as a way to save money in this belt-tightening time.

Have drivers been inconvenienced at any time? Can anyone gauge the amount of traffic on weekdays? And where does this traffic originate? Is most coming from Route 17, or from the Route [...]

Suffern’s Urban Renewal Plan Gets Another Look

November
11

Residents will get another look at the proposed urban renewal plan between 120 Orange Ave. and Chestnut Street sometime in January.

There could be fewer floors – six rather then the seven initially proposed, but more than the four recommended by the Planning Board – which means fewer units. Deputy Mayor Dagan LaCorte said today that [...]

Who are the Ramapo Democrats ?

October
2

I’ve been criticized by some supporters of Ramapo Democrats for Change for calling them insurgents. Some readers, including writers to the Editorial Page, have seen this as a bias in favor of their opposition. Now, I’ve relied on Webster’s New World Dictionary, Third College Edition, for a definition of insurgents: “designating or of a faction in [...]

What about Obama?

September
18

As the Rockland Democratic Committee meeting was overrun Wednesday night – Sept. 17 – by Ramapo Democrats for Change, I couldn’t help noticing a couple of 12-inch by 10-inch posters stuck to the wall behind the podium.

They were campaign posters carrying photos of state Senate hopeful Gregory Julian on top and the Democratic candidate for [...]

Ramapo Democratic Democracy?

September
16

The county Democratic Committee meeting on Wednesday – that’s tomorrow, Sept. 17 – could be an exciting one with the potential of a showdown between newly elected Ramapo Democrats for Change and the party status quo.

Joseph Meyers, a county legislator from Airmont and a committeeman who organized the reform movement, said his cohorts would ask [...]

Building Ramapo

September
12

Ramapo’s Planning Board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16, has a variety of agenda items that may be of interest. The meeting begins at 8:15 p.m. in Town Hall, 237 Route 59, Airmont.

One is a review of a revised approval of a 40-lot subdivision, Pascack Meadows, proposed on 18.5 acres by Alex Goldberger. It would be [...]

Shrinking Suffern’s Urban Renewal Site

September
11

The village is looking at an urban renewal project one-third the size of the original plan to upgrade Orange Avenue near the central business district and boost the trade of downtown merchants.

That’s the meat of a hearing this week by the Planning Board, which heard Deputy Mayor Dagan LaCorte announce the smaller project. He said [...]

Christopher St. Lawrence

August
22

This blogger has noticed that posts with the name of Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence draw an extraordinary amount of attention.

It’s not like Mr. St. Lawrence can drop his last name and be known around the world as Chris, ala Elvis or Ali, but hey, when it comes to name recognition, St. Lawrence rings a [...]

Ramapo Democrats up for grabs?

August
18

The Sept. 9 Democratic primary isn’t just about Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee’s race against Town Clerk Christian Sampson. It’s also about control of the town committee, with more than 200 canidates for seats in 31 of 90 election districts.

Ramapo Democrats for Change, the group challenging the status quo, said in an e-mail this week that it [...]

A tree dies in Suffern

August
8

A weeping cherry tree planted in May to honor Village Clerk Virginia Menschner is apparently taking its last gasp.

The now leafless tree in front of Village Hall may have been the victim of too much kindness, in this case a bit of over watering, a landscaping company has told village officials.

If it doesn’t revive, a [...]

Anyone psyched up for landfill living?

August
1

The proposal of a New Jersey real estate developer to build about 650 apartments in the closed Ramapo landfill seems to have caught a lot of folks by surprise.

One reader commented that the story about putting apartments on a Superfund hazardous waste site sounded like a late April Fool’s Day joke.

It’s no joke to the [...]

Wright for life?

July
25

Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright will have a bit of competition for his office this year, at least in the Sept. 9 Republican primary. The Democrat Wright got the okay of the Republicans to enter a primary against political newcomer Marino Fontana, a registered Republican.

The idea is for Wright to get hold of the Republican ballot [...]

How about a photo of Charles Holbrook?

July
24

I was over at Clarkstown Town Hall today and noticed that the hall of fame at the main entrance lacks a photo portrait of Charles Holbrook, the former town supervisor.

There are pictures of everyone else, including Holbrook predecessors Ted Dusanenko and George Gerber. There’s even one of Holbrook’s father, the late Martin Holbrook, a former [...]
