Michael Bongiorno was angrier than most about Gov. Eliot Spitzer being reportedly involved with prostitutes. And not too many people were happier than Bongiorno that Spitzer’s political career could end.
Talking about Spitzer angers Bongiorno, who was Rockland’s district attorney for 12 years until losing in November to Democrat Thomas Zugibe.

Bongiorno, a Republican, still blames Spitzer for costing him election. Spitzer convinced New Square leaders to recommend they give the community’s bloc vote to Zugibe, during the final days of the campaign. Even when New Square leaders offered to split the community’s vote, Bongiorno said, Spitzer demanded it all for Zugibe.

Angelo Cintron and Ricky Sanchez, both Democrats and former Haverstraw village trustees, will be formally endorsing two Republican candidates, not their fellow Democrats, in November.
According to a statement released yesterday, Cintron and Sanchez support incumbents District Attorney Michael Bongiorno and Haverstraw village Mayor Francis “Bud” Wassmer.
Democrat Tom Zugibe, former West Haverstraw village justice, is challenging Bongiorno. Democrat Mike Kohut, Haverstraw village trustee, is running against Wassmer.
Sanchez ran against Kohut in the Democratic primary in September and was defeated by 36 votes.
Cintron unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Wassmer in 2003.
“In the past, both Angelo and I have had disagreements with the mayor, but we have never questioned his dedication and hard work in improving the village, Sanchez stated in the press release. “Of the two candidates for mayor, there is no question that Mayor Wassmer is the best choice.
Cintron said that he decided to support the Republicans because he believed that they were the best people for the community.
“We know that it’s highly unusual for two lifelong Democrats like ourselves to endorse Republican candidates, Cintron said.
Cintron and Sanchez will officially announce of their endorsement at 2 p.m. tomorrow at 41 New Main St.

Late yesterday afternoon, I was covering a welcome-home reception for the Haverstraw Little League softball team, which advanced in the Little League Softball Junior Division World Series all the way to the semifinals. They finished fourth in the series.
The girls were tired because on Sunday, they flew back to Syracuse from Washington State, where the tournament was held, and on Monday, they drove down to Haverstraw to make it to the party. But I think they enjoyed the attention they got.
The celebration attracted some candidates in the fall elections.
Republican Sheriff James Kralik arrived at the pavilion at the Bowline Point Park shortly before his challenger, Democrat Tim O’Neill, who is currently a Stony Point Town Board member. Republican County District Attorney Michael Bongiorno and his challenger, Democrat Tom Zugibe, also showed up to praise the team’s achievement.
