Solutions for the Stony Point bridge issues to be discussed

August
23

State, county and local officials as well as representatives of businesses will once again get together Monday to discuss solutions to the pressing issues involving the James A. Farley Memorial Bridge on Route 9W in Stony Point.

The meeting is to follow up the ideas that came out of the Aug. 7 meeting, initiated by state Sen. Thomas Morahan.

“My role here is to make sure that they are all on the same page, they are all working together, and they all know what their needs are,” Morahan said, referring to the different parties who need to cooperate to solve the problem, at the Republican headquarters that opened this morning.

The state Department of Transportation has banned vehicles — trucks, buses, fire engines — heavier than 20,000 pounds, or 10 tons, from using the bridge, a major route for commercial traffic, since July 3 as a result of an in-depth inspection that revealed corrosion on the steel structure of the 85-year-old span.

The DOT is currently working on bridge repairs mainly on weekends to try to make the bridge available for heavier vehicles. But the state agency made it clear that the vehicles heavier than 80,000 pounds, or 40 tons, would never be able to cross the bridge until the bridge is replaced.

At the Aug. 7 meeting, ideas such as possibly creating a detour for trucks heavier than 80,000 pounds and expediting the planned replacement project of the bridge, although the bridge might have to be shut for nearly a year.

Suffern flood relief years away

July
1

It’s may not be news to folks in Suffern who’ve kept tabs on such things, but it could be years before the Army Corps of Engineers, along with the states of New York and New Jersey, approve a multi-prong effort to keep the Mahwah River at bay.

The year 2013 was a date that Gerald Levitus, president of the Squire’s Gate homeowners association, recalled of a potential construction start-up, and that may not take into consideration the long list of projects that could come out of this year’s massive flooding in the Midwest.

The Army Corps of Engineers Web site shows that a Mahwah-Ramapo river project, based on a 1990 design, would cost $23 million in today’s money.

State Sen. Thomas Morahan, R-New City, has pledged New York’s cooperation and contribution to funding — both New York and New Jersey must sign off on any project, as well as Suffern and Ramapo — and he organized a meeting last week of interested local, federal and state officials to discuss the situation.

Rockland lawmakers honor Thurgood Marshall

May
14

Legislation has passed both state chambers to declare Friday as Thurgood Marshall Day in the state.

The measure was sponsored by State Sen. Thomas Morahan,  R-New City, and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, D-Suffern, to honor the Supreme Court justice for his contributions to the civil rights movement.

Marshall visited Rockland in 1943 to call for desegregation of a Hillburn school.

According to a press release issued jointly by Morahan and Jaffee, several prominent Rocklanders joined the lawmakers in Albany on Monday, including Legislature Vice Chairman William Darden, D-Hillcrest, his brother Spring Valley Mayor George Darden, Spring Valley NAACP president Willie Trotman, and Willie Bryant from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

LoHud pork

May
8

The other day, The Journal News and LoHud.com ran an article on how much money various state Senators and Assembly members had gotten in what are technically called member items, but more colloquially called pork.

Our data desk has put together a searchable database that you can access here.

Rockland’s lone state senator, Thomas Morahan (R-New City), ranked in the top 10 of all state legislators in the amount of money he secured for projects and organizations in his home district.

He alone brought about $2 million to his district. For all of Rockland’s legislators combined — Morahan and Assembly members Ellen Jaffee, D-Suffern; Nancy Calhoun, R-Blooming Grove; Annie Rabbitt, R-Greenwood Lake; and Kenneth P. Zebrowski, D-New City — nearly $3 million came to their constituents, though Morahan, Rabbitt and Calhoun also serve parts of Orange County, where some of those funds went.
